Energy and communication - our lines of business
Umeå Energi produces, distributes, and sells energy to some 57 000 private and corporate customers.
We offer environmentally adapted district heating and district cooling as well as electrical power and telecom services at very competitive prices all over Sweden. Umeå Energi is also the successful broadband company.
Our head office is located in Umeå – a dynamic and innovative centre in the north of Sweden with 110 000 inhabitants, two universities, and an expanding business sector. The Group has some 270 employees and an annual turnover of just over SEK 1 billion.
Umeå Energi is certified in line with ISO 14001
The Group is certified in accordance with ISO 14001, an international standard for environmental management system guaranteeing satisfactory operational control and monitoring.
This means, among other things, that we are subject to annual auditing by independent auditors and that we must continuously develop and improve our environmental work. If not, we will lose our certificate.
Occupational health and safety management system
Umeå Energi has an occupational health and safety management system that fulfils the requirements of AFS 2001:1.
The number of Umeå Energi employees on sick-leave has radically decreased during the last years, which is very satisfying. The health and well-being of our staff is a matter of humanitarian as well as economic interest.
Our ‘Feel Good’ program, which includes a wide range of small and large measures and options, has clearly contributed to this positive change. What started as a project is now integrated into our line organisation.
A power contract allowing price drops
Most of our customers choose to sign an electricity contract with us to safeguard against price rises. The most popular contract is Tryggel, offering customers advantageous term, such as the right to sign a new contract after half the period of the existing contract.
One of Sweden's best electricity networks
Our electricity network covers more than 4 400 kilometre and is one of the most reliable networks in Sweden, with far fewer and shorter interruptions in power supply than the national average.
Dåva squeezes energy out of waste
Dåva combined heat and power plant just outside the city of Umeå is one of the world’s most energy effective and environmentally adapted waste-fuelled plants. Thanks to a combination of innovative solutions essentially the entire energy value of the fuel can be recovered.
The Dåva plant converts waste into energy and electricity in an environmentally acceptable manner.
Umeå is a district heated city
Today, more than 70 per cent of the total indoor area in Umeå is heated by district heating and the figure continues to rise. Environmentally adapted district heating has replaced thousands of polluting oil boilers and reduced the amount of electricity used for heating.
Umeå Energi has a number of district heating production plants. The two largest plants are Dåva combined heat and power plant, and the Ålidhem plant, which is a pure heating plant.
During a number of years, district heating has gained market shares on a growing market, which has resulted in the fact that the planning of a new production unit will have to be speeded up.
District cooling - a boost for the environment
Umeå Energi uses absorption refrigerators to produce district cooling – the biggest is located next to our Ålidhem heating plant. These hi-tech refrigerators are driven by district heating from our own heat production. Consequentally, we make cold out of heat!
District cooling is good for the climate, indoors as well as outdoors. Moreover, district cooling can, in most cases, replace conventional electricity driven refrigerators that contain refrigerants contributing to the greenhouse effect.
UmeNet continues at high speed
Umeå Energi is also a successful broadband company. We own UmeNet, the optical fibre-based network, which has made Umeå one of the best IT connected cities in the world. We continue at high speed the extension of the urban and regional networks.
